Printing exceptional quality Black and Whites Prints at home.
August 19, 2025Background: I was a news photographer in the 80s and 90s and did a lot of traditional monochrome negative to print lab work and loved the quality / tonal range etc. I still have many of the prints at home.
I’ve wanted to duplicate the results since and now I think I’ve achieved the closest yet. Note: This is for BnW printing only.
My current setup is the pigment-based Canon Pro 1000 Printer combined with Red River Palo Duro SoftGloss Rag Photo Art Paper.
The printer, of course is awesome and the paper is made from 100% cotton rag and featuring a lightly textured soft gloss surface,
Most-importantly the Palo Duro Rag is designed to give you the classic look of a darkroom photographic print with the performance of modern inkjet technology.
Careful editing, setting blacks and white with care and a few 5x7 tests prints should produce very dramatic effects for you.
Most pro printing houses have the Canon Prp 1000 to use on a pay per print basis.
